WHY SCHOOL PROFILES ARE IMPORTANT IN THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

“To educate means to help the human soul enter into the totality of reality” -Luigi Giussani

During my first year of being a counselor, I encountered many terms that left me confused. Especially as a millennial trying to understand the new Generation Z TikTok trends and slang. However, one academic term that I found myself puzzled by but eventually came to understand is “school profile.” It’s an important term and document for the college application process, let me break it down for you.

As a senior in high school, you're about to submit your college applications and one of the most important document that colleges will look at is your school profile. This document, typically provided by your high school counselor, gives colleges a detailed overview of your high school. This includes the curriculum, extracurricular offerings, and student demographics.

Colleges use your school profile to gain insight into the level of academic rigor at your high school and the resources and support available to you as a student. For example, if your school offers a wide range of Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment courses, it tells colleges that your school provides challenging coursework and that you were prepared academically. This in turn can help them understand the context of your grades and test scores better.

Moreover, your school profile also provides information about the extracurricular activities, clubs, and programs that are offered at your high school. This is important for colleges as it gives them a sense of the opportunities and experiences you've had outside of the classroom. It also helps them understand how you have grown as a person and what kind of person you are. Admissions officers want to understand how you spent your time in high school and what you are passionate about.

When paired with your transcripts, it allows admission officers to get a better sense of the scholarly and involved you. Colleges want to see if you are taking advantage of the opportunities provided to you. For example, if your school is offering an Advanced Placement for you to challenge yourself and to improve your Weighted Grade Point Average why are you not embracing the opportunity?

In summary, your school profile is a critical document (when paired with your transcripts and other supporting documents) that provides colleges with a comprehensive view of your high school experience, including the academic rigor and resources available to you, as well as the extracurricular activities and opportunities that have helped shape you as a student and person. It is a vital tool that helps admissions officers understand the context of your achievements and how you have grown during your high school years.
